Last night as I prepared my daughter for bed I thought about my classroom. So many things went through my mind. I felt so overwhelmed. I was anxious about getting to the school the next day to get my room in order. I had so many ideas going through my mind.

Well this morning when I got to the school I got some things rolling. I finished up a bulletin board and began another bulletin board. I used stem wire tape to wrap my ink pens and flowers together to create a floral arrangement. I covered my book shelf in butcher paper, which I have to put finishing touches on it tomorrow. I chit chatted with the art teacher about some things for his department. I believe I am off to a good start.

Oh, I forgot to mention, that I met a few of the other staff persons on Monday. My school's staff feels like a family already. I am so excited to see what is in store. I am expecting good things this school year. I plan to build strong relationships with the staff, students, parents and stakeholders. I can't wait for the first day of school.

Also, on Monday, I spoke with the librarian, who happens to be my Soror, about Career Cafe. We are going to intertwine Career Cafe with her idea to do something with the students on Fridays in the library. It will be along the lines of literacy and careers. There you have it, something else for me to be super hyped about in regards to this upcoming school year.

Goodies for my Good students - positive reinforcement treasure chest

Ink pen anyone?

A neat way to teach about self image and motivation!

  1. Wow! Your space is a nice size. I am praying to get my original counseling office space back this year. It's not huge, but definitely better than what I have now.

I see your DST bag on the chair. My bag would be pink and green, but we're all sisters, right? :o)

I look forward to reading more about your transition this year.

  2. I am so excited about this! I just graduated with my School Counseling degree, but have yet to find a school counseling position. I'm always wondering how first year elementary school counselors find their way around and tie everything together. Now I can follow you and get ideas on how you do it. Thanks so much for this!

  3. Oh Rekeshia you have such great ideas and energy! I love the way you set up your back to school night with such wonderful resources for parents and I can't wait to hear about how it went! I also made the switch from high school to elementary and have never looked back. I really love all the classroom and other prevention work that is possible at the elementary level and how integrated my work is with the classroom, related arts, and special ed teachers.

We have two new elementary counselors starting in our district and I will send them the link to your blog. I'll also give it a shout out on my blog's facebook page and will link to it on my blog's blogroll (probably next week).

I haven't forgotten about sending you my 5th grade sexual harassment lesson - I've been working on getting my books all catalogued, but should get to it next week.

    You're doing great work!
